Welcome

Claire Kerr

I am a self-taught artist who enjoys bringing urban landscapes to life through my distinctive line and wash technique.

Inspired by the character and essence of buildings, city scenes and architectural details, I capture the urban environment in ink and watercolour.

I love drawing with fountain pens and often sketch and paint on location, following the principles of the global Urban Sketchers (USk) movement.

My more considered pieces are created in the comfort of the studio. Here I can apply greater precision than fluidity, producing artwork that offers a lasting memory of a special place.

Thank you @junelloydartist and @ocartsocietycr5 for the plein air session today at Coombe Gardens. I didn't quite manage to finish so added some final touches to my sketch at home, along with the shadows.
I forgot to post my attempt at the demo I attended from @stephanieabower She had made it look so easy. And while I didn't find the drawing too hard - and Stephanie's demo had helped me with that even more - it was the painting I struggled with.

I had forgotten to take a photo, so nipped back into the Basilica on the Saturday. There was a wedding going on, while tourists looked around (and sketchers took photos!)

Fab last day at the @usksymposium . A very hectic "big family photo", followed by an enjoyable closing ceremony.

Lovely to meet you @rayhanah_yakub_natha and @notsobeginnerartist87 and @rovinbgjaysketcher... and great to spend time with you @yellowjools 😃

I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to @stefano.boidi or @espenangvoll or @__art.and.me__ or @thesketchingdoc ... and so many others I have met along the way. And I didn't even get to meet you @claireogallagherart 😢

But safe travels everyone and I hope I will see you all in Toronto 🇨🇦!

Au revoir Toulouse ... et merci beaucoup!

I promise I'm not stalking you, @karenjjonesjohn , I just really love your work.

EDIT: I didn't take a very good pic of it last night ... the lighting in the closing ceremony wasn't exactly great for that. But it looks even better this morning in natural light. 👌

I didn't fancy the long walk to today's official @usksymposium sketchwalk, so I went to Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse instead.

The sun shone on the walk there and back, but for most of the time while I was sketching, it was cloudy ... thankfully.

I liked this much better before the watercolour. Have to keep practising.

It's been a @stephanieabower kind of day today. It started with her lecture, Ten Tips Every Sketcher Should Know About Perspective. I've done Stephanie's Domestika courses, followed many of her free video/online demos, and I even have her book on perspective. But it's still great to be reminded of some of the key pointers.

Then I went to her demo, Soaring Spaces of St Sernin, which was just brilliant. Stephanie was very generous with her time and advice ... and very patient with the exacting demands of the Basilica staff!

The first event of the #usksymposium was the Bienvenue sketchwalk. This is the Hôpital La Grave from across the Garonne. It is hot ... about 37° today ... and the watercolour dries much more quickly than I'm used to! It was a short event, and I'm not a fast sketcher, so unfortunately I didn't make it back in time for the throwdown.

Also, as I can't cope with a sweaty back from my rucksack, so I've bought an old lady shopping bag to carry my kit in. Should make things easier.

Bonjour Toulouse! Seeing others show their kit, I thought I'd do the same. I started to label everything separately, but gave up (Instagram is not my forte). I'm sure you can work out what everything is.

I've arrived at the hotel and am already starstruck by some of the urban sketching royalty I've seen ... @lapinbarcelona @lizsteelart @ianfennelly @stephanieabower @roisincure and @janeblundellart for a start and loads of other faces I recognise.

Im really excited for my first USk Symposium. Allez les Bleus 🇫🇷 for tonight. (England's turn tomorrow 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 )

I had a really wonderful day at @scotneycastle_nt yesterday for one of the @jacksons_art plein air days.

The weather was beautiful (even if I did get a touch of sunburn), my fellow artists were lovely, @simongazzard and @takahashipaintings did demos and the whole day was brilliantly set up and run by everyone involved from Jackson's and Scotney Castle.

I went to the last one, when I painted the castle itself, so this time I chose the rear of the building that the shop is housed in - I can't resist a clock tower.

It's so nice to meet so many fellow sketchers. Having a great time. (And I did manage to snag a badge! ).
